Queries Corner |
Q1. Has any batsman reached a fifty in this IPL during the Powerplay? – Akhil Vartak, Udipi A2. Two batsmen Lokesh Rahul for KXIP and Sunil Narine for KKR have managed to do so. Rahul made 51 in 16 balls against DD at Mohali, while Narine managed 50 in 19 balls against RCB at Kolkata. Both were dismissed inside the Powerplay overs: Rahul (4.5 overs) and Narine (5.2 overs). Interestingly both the above instances came on the same day – April 8, 2018! Q2. What were the most productive overs in terms of runs and wickets in IPL 2018? – Mayank Sethi, New Delhi A2. The most productive over in this year’s IPL in terms of runs scored has been the 18 over, in which 1180 runs have been scored, followed by 1097 runs which came in the 19 over and 1092 runs in the third over of the match. The fewest runs came in the very first over – 771 runs! The most productive over for the bowlers has been obviously the 20 over, which saw 71 wickets fall, followed by 53 wickets each in the 18 and 19 overs respectively. For the record, the least productive over for the bowlers has been the seventh over, that saw just 20 wickets!
Q3. In two successive IPL matches, eight catches were taken by fielders of their own bowling. Is this some sort of a record? – Rohit Kumar, Jaipur A3. Four ‘caught and bowled’ dismissals in the same match is an IPL record. It is a coincidence that this happened in successive matches during the recent playoffs at the Wankhede Stadium and Eden Gardens. The previous best in IPL was three c&b catches in a match that occurred on three occasions!
A2. Only two players have this distinction of top scoring in each innings of their country’s maiden Test match - South African Bernard Tancred made 29 runs in each innings (in March 1889) against England at Port Elizabeth and now Ireland's Kevin O'Brien (40 & 118) at Malahide, near Dublin. The following 14 batsmen did so on their Test debut: England: Edmond Tylecote, George Gunn, Tony Greig, Kevin Pietersen Australia: Harry Moses, Reggie Duff South Africa: Bernard Tancred New Zealand: Lee Germon India: Lala Amarnath, Dilawar Hussain Pakistan: Umar Akmal Bangladesh: Mohd Ashraful, Tamim Iqbal Ireland: Kevin O'Brien Note: Kiwi Germon was also captain |
